A friend and I hiked the Haleakala crater for my birthday this year (back in late march). I'm finally going through the shots. The Haleakala Crater is 10,000 ft above sealevel on the island of Maui, Hawaii. We hiked 30 miles over about 3 days and it was a blast! Except that the 70lbs pack was really heavy! I'm only 150 lbs... yikes!
In any case, this is just a snapshot from after we set up our tents on the first day. It was raining all afternoon (and at that altitude it was about 40 degrees F), but the clouds parted for this shot. I was not prepared for the cold though! I stood around long enough to enjoy the sunset, and then we turned on the stove to warm up.
Sounds very fun! Cold in the tropics... enroute to Mombasa from New York one time, I had to overnight in Nairobi... I was dressed for the hot latitudes, tropical shirt and shorts, but when I got up next morning, waiting for the taxi I was almost shivering - when I asked the temp, it was 65°F, and we were only a few degrees from the equator. I thought I would be smart and ask how high the altitude was, and the cab driver guessed at "about 2500"... which I didn't think would explain it. Then, "oh, meters, duh!"
People still look at me funny when I tell them that there is snow in Hawaii, too!
